From container to connector

Smart African Stops

The client is a prestigious transport company based in Dar es Salaam, active in the sector for several years and widely recognized for the reliability and extensive reach of its services. Among its core operations is a bus line connecting Tanzania to Kenya, running along a route of approximately 1,200 kilometers with a fleet of 25 coaches operating continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With the aim of enhancing operational efficiency and improving the passenger experience, the company has commissioned us to design a prototype station to be implemented at key stops along the route. The goal is to create a modular, functional, and replicable infrastructure that meets both logistical and comfort needs of travelers. Given the client’s substantial availability of shipping containers, the concept involves repurposing them into functional spaces that will include administrative and operational offices, ticketing counters and information points, traveler services and rest areas, commercial units for local businesses, and dedicated areas for company personnel. The shelters will be constructed using lightweight yet durable structures, covered with corrugated metal panels to ensure protection from weather conditions. Platforms will be equipped with prefabricated, ergonomic seating made from long-lasting materials, designed to provide comfort even during extended waiting times.

A large-capacity water tank, positioned above the office area, will supply water to all internal functions, including restrooms and refreshment areas. The system will be designed for easy maintenance and long-term sustainability. The station will function as an intermodal terminal, strategically designed to facilitate the interchange between long-distance coaches and local public transport modes such as vans (dala dala) and motorcycles (bajo). This integrated approach aims to reduce transit and waiting times, improve safety and flow management, and provide a smoother and more accessible travel experience. This project goes beyond the construction of a simple bus stop; it aspires to set a new benchmark for regional transport infrastructure. Each station will serve as a vital mobility hub, a reference point for local communities, and a catalyst for economic development along the corridor.
